A pinhole camera is a simple, lensless camera consisting of a light-proof box with a tiny aperture on one side and a screen (or film) on the opposite side. It creates an inverted, real image by allowing light to travel in straight lines through the hole. It is widely used to teach basic optics and for long-exposure photography
Principle: Operates on the rectilineal propagation of light (light travels in straight lines).
Structure: A dark, enclosed box, a small pinhole, and a screen or photo-sensitive material (film/paper) opposite the hole.
Image Characteristics: The image is always inverted (upside down and flipped).
Focus: It has an almost infinite depth of field; no focusing is required, as everything is generally in focus.
Pinhole Size: Smaller holes create sharper images but require longer exposure times. Very small holes can cause diffraction (blurring).
Internal Reflection: The interior is usually painted black to reduce reflections that could ruin the image.
Example: Making a Simple Shoebox Pinhole Camera
Prep the Box: Paint the inside of a shoebox black to minimize light reflections.
Make the Pinhole: Cut a 1-inch square hole in the center of one end. Tape a piece of aluminum foil over this hole, and make a tiny puncture with a needle in the center of the foil.
Create the Screen: Opposite the pinhole, place a piece of white wax paper or tracing paper to act as a screen to view the image.
Observation: Cover your head and the rear of the box with a dark cloth to watch the image form on the screen.
