Isolation Songs (2020)
Program note:
Isolation Songs (2020), by Ed Garcia. For any number of performers, for open/flexible instrumentation. Conceived for the UCSC Percussion Ensemble as directed by William Winant. This piece explores musical connections between performers in musically isolating environments, and is presented as three "songs" connected by and overlaid with interludes. Thanks for watching!
Song 1: "A Soothing Resonance" (begins at 1'00"), for open instrumentation and any number of performers. The performers recorded their parts individually (independent, and without influence from the rest of the ensemble), with aid of a provided lead sheet and click track. This process was done in two stages:
Stage 1, Isolation: Each performer created and recorded their own musical material based on predetermined elements of the composition (form, tempi, expressive text, and other parameters). Due to their isolation, the performers did not know what – or when – others will play.
Stage 2, Connection: Each recording from Stage 1 was combined into a composite audio track, which was listened to by all performers. This was the performers’ only opportunity to hear everyone else’s contributions. According to predetermined factors, all performers recorded additional musical material to supplement the Stage 1 composite.
The composite recorded material from Stages 1 and 2 became the final product for “A Soothing Resonance,” which in turn influenced the structure for subsequent songs.
In the second song, "Fields Among Pillars" (begins at 2'30"), each performer was assigned one of two distinct musical paths, each governing instrumentation (metal, wood, drums vs. metal, wood, glass) and event placement.
Each performer was assigned one of four specific paths in the third song, "Ghost Town" (begins at 4'05"). Each path included a desk sound and one other sound type (friction, rustling, water/sand, drum skins).
