BLACK IRISH BAND- Garyowen

Sonora's Black Irish Band performing live one of their traditional Irish favorites. The song is Garyowen and was recorded live. The location was the Florence Performing Arts Center in Florence Oregon on April 20th 2008

Garryowen, also known as Garyowen, Garry Owen and Gary Owens, is an Irish tune for a quickstep dance. The band is seen here featuring members David Rainwater and Patrick Michael Karanahan. The song melody can be found on the bands "Ireland Song" CD album. The song has a rich and very colorful history

History: In the civil War- Was a song used by the 69th Infantry Regiment, New York Militia, (most were Irish) then In 1867, "Garryowen" was adopted by the 7th Cavalry Regiment as the official ..... the Garryowen in the song. The song was also a favorite of Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough-riders.Many United States Army Bands still perform this historic song as a brass band marching tune. The Black irish band our one of the first bands to perform the melody more as an Irish Traditional tune.
