For many Americans, the words "obey" and "obedience" stick in the craw. We don't like to be told what to do - witness the resistance to COVID masks - and resist mightily whenever we suspect our autonomy might be threatened. But in the Christian tradition, obedience is actually the route to spiritual freedom. Fr. Kerry explains by examining the monastic understanding of obedience.
