So excited to get my copy of Atsushi Futatsuya’s sashikostory book today! I think the way a book review works is I’m supposed to read it first, but I already know it’s going to be great based on what a great speaker and teacher Atsushi is.
I was really lucky to get into his always-sold-out class at QuiltCon in Phoenix last year; it’s no joke that I’d been waiting years to take a Sashiko class but had decided it had to be with Atsushi.
I wanted to take from someone with the knowledge and respect for the history and tradition of Sashiko that he has. Whenever I learn a craft, it’s super important that if that craft comes from a different culture, I learn about it from that context and with respect to that culture.
Actually it’s respect but also just genuine curiosity. How can you not want to learn the roots and traditions behind things? Its not that I’m a purist and think things have to be done exactly as they have always been done, but I think an understanding and respect for the history of a craft brings so much more depth to your practice and projects.
