Hawkins National Laboratory doesn't actually exist, but it has real-world roots. The US Department of Energy actually funds a National Laboratories program. Stranger Things is based on a place in Montauk, called Camp Hero. Rumor has it that secret government experiments were held there, including mind-control and time-travel experiments, during the Cold War. The fact is that the CIA did conduct an actual mind-control program called MK-Ultra! The unwitting victims were subjected to various morally dubious tests.

And while Stranger Things Lab is fictional, you still can visit Hawkins lab in real life, because Stranger Things filming locations are in Georgia. The Hawkins Laboratory is there as well!
