About the Talk:
Myths are associated with mankind for centuries. Though myths are firm beliefs of many people but they lack scientific basis and evidence. Myths like a black cat crossing your path brings misfortune, breaking of mirror or glass is considered unlucky, cutting of hair or nails after sunset is widely believed to bring bad luck, if someone sneezes when you're about to leave the house, it is considered a bad omen, giving curd and sugar before leaving for important work is believed to
bring success. All of these myths or beliefs are not supported by any facts or scientific evidence. Similarly, several myths are attached with dentistry which we will be discussing and shall be providing the actual facts regarding each myth. Myths are deep-rooted in society and understanding them becomes essential to provide good health care.
About the Speaker:
A distinguished endodontist and academic leader from the King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, Prof. A. P. Tikku served over 45 years at the institution, rising from student to Dean of the Faculty of Dental Sciences. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Dental Sciences from the KGMU in 1982 and 1986, respectively. He then joined KGMU as faculty in Endodontics and got superannuation in 2023. During his tenure at KGMU, Prof. Tikku has served as the Head, Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics; Dean, Faculties of Dental Sciences, Student’s Welfare and Alumni; Executive Council Member and acting Vice-chancellor. During his career as a teacher and researcher, Prof. Tikku has trained more than 1600 undergraduate and 125 postgraduate students over the years. He has also guided more than 50 thesis projects and has published several articles in National and International Journals. He has also participated in a large number of scientific meetings both in India and abroad. Dr. Tikku is a Fellow of the Indian Society for Dental Research and of the International College of Dentists, India. He has also been the Vice President, Indian Society of Dental Research; President and Vice President Federation of Operative Dentistry, India; President and Vice President Indian Endodontic Society; and President and Vice President Indian Dental Association, Lucknow branch. He is also a Member of the State Dental Council, U.P. and Zonal Regent; International College of Dentists, India. Prof. Tikku is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award (2023) by the Indian Endodontic Society. As an elected EC Member of the Dental Council of India he has been instrumental in starting and regulating UG & PG Courses in several Dental
Colleges in the country. He has also been Chairman of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) committee; Chairman of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) review board, and Member, Assessment committee of the University Grants Commission. A sports enthusiast in cricket, golf and horse riding, Dr. Tikku has also been the
President of KGMU Athletic Association.
