The Road to Greatness in Photography
Developing maturity and greatness as a photographer requires years of practice, combined with trial and error to develop your talents.
As we talked about Michael Kenna yesterday, the subject came up about Kenna clones. Sure his style is beautiful and minimal. Its easy to copy. But clones will never be more than copies of Kenna.
Michael Kenna is naturally talented for sure. He also spent years paying his dues. In fact he wasn't known in the gallery world for over 20 years after starting as a printer with Ruth Bernhard. That's because he was dedicated enough and willing to do what was required to refine and mature his own style. Its not something he learned from a book or a video.
I want to look at 2 other photographers who's work has matured over their careers. The early work is great, but I want to show you the refinement and maturity into the styles they now work in.
Steve Jobs quoted Picasso (who may or may not have said) saying good artists borrow, great artists steal. While there is truth to this statement its also important to note that he left out all of the hard work that even Jobs put in at Apple that got from point A to point B. It wasn't just stealing.
