Robot Monk Gabi

South Korea’s largest Buddhist sect welcomed a new kind of monk this week: a humanoid robot named “Gabi.” The four-foot-tall robot participated in a Buddhist initiation ceremony at a temple in Seoul, where it pledged vows including respecting life, listening to humans, treating other robots peacefully and saving energy.

Developed by Chinese robotics company Unitree Robotics, Gabi also took part in a modified purification ritual and is expected to join upcoming Buddha’s birthday lantern festival celebrations as Buddhist leaders explore integrating AI into religious practice.
