Amber - The Tears of the Sun

Amber is not just dried tree resin. True amber has taken hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years to polymerise, making it less soluble in common, organic solvents and will not become sticky if wet with alcohol, acetone or gasoline. It ranges in colour from light yellow to deep orange similar to the colour spectrum of the sun’s rays from dawn to dusk and can sometimes have small insects or plant matter captured inside from when they became trapped in the tree’s resin as it was secreted. It is possibly the oldest substance used by humans for adornment, with beads and pendants being found in gravesites dating back to 8,000 B.C. Much myth surrounds amber. One legend tells of amber being formed by the rays of the setting sun. Another says amber is the tears of Freyja, the Norse goddess of love and beauty.
