PCT Day 4 – 19.3 miles Pacific Crest Trail #pacificcresttrail #pct #thruhiking
PCT Day 4 – 19.3 miles Pacific Crest Trail
Last night was the least sleep I’ve had on trail so far—wind howled through camp and my tent bounced off my head all night. We packed up and hiked out into more wind, back onto the trail and deeper into the desert, where water became scarce and hard-won.
Six miles in, we found a picnic area with a water tank. Someone had left behind a few precious bottles—trail magic—but I still had to fill from the tank. Picked the wrong spigot and got a bottle full of brown sludge. Watched another hiker get crystal-clear water from the other one. With 10 dry miles ahead, I filtered and hoped for the best. On the way out I saw a tree covered in holes—maybe woodpeckers’ work—but what blew my mind was how many nuts were crammed in them. Squirrels? Nature is weird?
Back on trail, massive mountain and valley views were constant, but the blooming cactus stole the show.
16 miles in, we hit another water tank—this one had cold, clean water. Heaven. Took a long break, rinsed off some trail grime, and laughed at my increasingly ridiculous knee brace tan lines.
We finished the day with a few more miles and I decided to cowboy camp until ants swarmed me. I put up my tent quickly before catching another amazing sunset.
