What is an Accretion Disk?

An accretion disk forms when material falls toward a massive object—such as a black hole, young star, or white dwarf—but cannot fall straight in because it has angular momentum. Instead, the material spreads into a spinning disk, where particles collide, compress, and heat up. This heating makes the disk shine, sometimes brightly enough to outshine entire galaxies in the case of quasars. Accretion disks are essential in astrophysics because they reveal how stars grow, how planets form, and how black holes consume matter and release enormous energy.
