Goethite (α-FeO(OH)) is an iron oxyhydroxide mineral and the most common of the iron oxyhydroxides. It forms through the weathering of iron-rich minerals and is a major component of rust and laterite soils. It typically appears in yellowish-brown to dark brown or black colors and exhibits habits such as botryoidal, stalactitic, or needle-like crystals.

It has a Mohs hardness of 5.0–5.5, a brown to yellowish streak, and is weakly magnetic. Goethite is economically significant as a primary iron ore (brown iron ore) and has been used since prehistoric times as a pigment (brown ochre), including in the cave paintings at Lascaux, France.

Notably, goethite was identified by NASA's Spirit rover in the Gusev crater on Mars, indicating past presence of liquid water.
