Mascaradas de Invierno

El impulso de adoptar una máscara ha sido algo inherente al ser humano desde su época más primitiva. El disfraz como medio para adquirir atributos mágicos, como una forma de confundir a los malos espíritus encarnándose en otro ser, el disfraz para ocultarse en la caza… o como mera transgresión festiva dejando atrás las convenciones sociales.

De una forma u otra, el hombre se transforma cambiando de piel y apariencia. La máscara le ofrece protección, la posibilidad de acercarse a lo extraño, fundirse con lo ajeno convirtiéndose en algo distinto, nuevo y al mismo tiempo ancestral. Seres a medio camino entre las bestias y los dioses.

Las Mascaradas de invierno son un conjunto dispar de milenarias celebraciones paganas, predominantemente rurales, cuyo origen se remonta a ritos prerromanos de sociedades agrícolas y ganaderas. Con el fin del invierno llega el momento de la purificación, de espantar a los malos espíritus y favorecer la fertilidad del campo y sus rebaños.Los hombres se disfrazan tomando elementos de la naturaleza y materiales de desecho que rodean su vida cotidiana. Pieles, sacos, telas, cuernos, paja, trapos, ramas, huesos, cuerdas, centeno… todo ello aderezado con distintas campanillas, cencerros o esquilas que resuenan por las calles alejando los males.

The drive for adopting a mask has been something inherent to the human being since his most primitive period. The costume as a way of obtaining new magical or spiritual attributes, as a medium to disorient bad spirits by being incarnated in another creature, the costume used to conceal oneself in hunting… or as a mere festive entertainment, leaving behind all social conventions.

In one way or another, man transforms himself by changing his skin and appearance; the mask offers him protection, the possibility of approaching to the uncanny, of merging with the foreign by turning it into something different, new and ancestral at the same time. Beings halfway between beasts and gods.

Winter Masquerades are made up from a group of different age-old pagan celebrations, predominantly rural ones, of which origins go back to pre-Roman rites of agricultural and cattle societies. At the end of winter comes the time of purification, of frightening bad spirits and encouraging the fertility of soil, cattle and women. Men dress up by taking elements from nature, animals or waste materials that are present in their everyday life. Skins, bags, fabrics, horns, straws, rags, branches, bones, ropes, rye… All decorated by small bells, cowbells and hand bells that resound throughout the streets to dispel all ills.
