Vegetarian Festival or “Cửu Hoàng Thắng Hội” is a Thai festival originating from a southern island of Phuket province about 180 years ago. Phuket Vegetarian Festival, also known as the vegetarian festival, is held in early October every year on Thailand's largest island. This is the time when people take to the streets to pray and perform an ascetic parade. During the 9 days of the festival, participants must show their devotion. In addition, devotees need to follow the rules during the festival, because this is the time when 9 gods descend to earth, blessing them with a bountiful harvest. The parade will take place throughout the historic streets of Phuket, where houses are hung with red lanterns symbolizing luck. Participants wear white clothes and pray throughout the trip to thank the gods, and at the same time ask for blessings to come to them in the coming year.
