Schools told to stop sharing children's faces online

UK schools are being warned to remove children’s photos from websites and social media after criminals used AI to turn ordinary school pictures into child abuse images.

Experts say cyber criminals are taking photos shared online, manipulating them with AI tools and then threatening schools with the fake images unless money is paid.

Child safety experts, the Internet Watch Foundation and the National Crime Agency are now urging schools to rethink how they share children’s images online – with some recommending that identifiable photos shouldn’t be used at all.

Child trauma and online harms expert Dr Catherine Knibbs said this is one of the reasons she tells parents and grandparents to stop posting their children online.

Health Visitor Ruth Watts called it a 'wake-up call' for parents.
