In 1907, physician Duncan MacDougall tried to weigh the human soul by placing dying patients on a sensitive balance and watching for a sudden drop at the moment of death. He tested six patients and claimed one body lost about three-fourths of an ounce, roughly 21 grams, but the results were inconsistent and the experiment was later heavily criticized. Even so, the number survived and became one of the strangest legends in science history.
