Kagami Biraki is a ceremony in which the lid of the sake barrel (taru) is broken open by a wooden mallet and the sake is served to everyone present.
Originating in an act performed by a shogun 300 years ago, the act of breaking open a sake barrel marks the start of something new. Kagami refers to the lid of the sake barrel and biraki means “to open” so kagami-biraki literally means “opening the lid.” Kagami Biraki is normally performed at celebratory events like weddings, opening ceremonies, festivals, anniversaries, New Year that symbolizes good fortune, wealth and prosperity. Once the sake barrel hit open by wooden mallet, sake will be served in Masu, wooden cup or wooden box with wooden ladle and guest will drink sake out of Masu, sake cup.
