Woodturning - The Batik Bowl (An Experiment With Batik Style Coloring)

In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a very simple bowl from cherry wood for an experimental finishing technique. I wanted to see if batik style dying could work on a woodturned bowl. The results of this experiment have shown me it is possible, but the bowl in this video is certainly not my favourite. I would love to know what you think of the style and if you like the finished piece.

Batik is a Technique normally used on fabric, where wax is applied and then a dye is added on top, the wax acts as a stencil and is later removed using heat.

Instead of dye on this occasion I chose to do cherry wood and ebonising solution.

As I say, this is the documenting of an experimental process and not so much a display of a final piece. It is hopefully a seed of an idea for woodturning finishes that others can pick up and take in their own directions.
