... "Shostakovich originally intended the Eleventh Symphony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution of 1905 and would have written it in 1955. Several personal factors prevented him from composing the work until 1957. These factors included the death of his mother, his tumultuous Second marriage and the arrival of many newly liberated friends of the Gulag. Released in Moscow, 1957 evokes the first uprising of 1905, when the peasants stormed the Tsar's Palace. Saturated with popular and revolutionary songs, it has been described as an opera without words of a single act, and won a Lenin Prize to Shostakovich in 1958. "The year 1905" recalls the beginning of the first Russian Revolution of 1905, which was partially dismissed by the events of January 22, 1905 of that year. Westerners characterized the symphony as an exaggerated "movie music", in other words, as an agitprop sheet of paper that lacks substance and depth. Many now consider that the work has a much more thoughtful attitude, one that looks at Russian history as a whole from the point of view of 1957, four years after Stalin's death. "...
