Rainwater Harvesting: Ethiopia sand dam training March 2009

Following a successful pilot project that was implemented in the Borana region in Ethiopia, RAIN Foundation and ERHA (Ethiopian Rainwater Harvesting Association), organised a second sand dam training in March 2009. 12 Ethiopian NGOs were trained on site-selection, design and construction of sand dams and rainwater harvesting tanks.
The training was held in Addis Ababa and included a visit to Borana (South-Ethiopia) where 5 sand dams were built in 2007 and 2008. The training was given by experts from Acacia Water, IVM VU of Amsterdam, RAIN and SASOL (Sahelian Solutions) from Kenya.

RAIN, check http://www.rainfoundation.org/ , has been working with its partners to develop, spread and implement rainwater harvesting systems around the globe since 2003.

Water buffering
If we want to achieve global food security, we have to work on water security first. Water buffer management combats severe water shortages by storing water during the wet periods, so it’s available during the dry seasons.

The 3R formula of recharging, retaining and reusing water can be applied all over the world, as good water management is needed everywhere.
