Shrewsbury Castle Crossbow Bolt - How To Forge Medieval Bodkins and Arrow Heads

In 2019, archaeologists excavating Shrewsbury Castle discovered two medieval crossbow bolt heads amongst 12th and 13th Century layers.

Working alongside Dr Morn Capper from the excavation team, and using her dimensions, details and images of the original heads I've put together this short video on how these heads would have been forged, using iron in a traditional coal forge.

The original heads were around 25g in weight, which for a 12th/13thC head is too large for an arrowhead, but fits perfectly with a crossbow bolt head.
