Pakistani PM Arrives in Beijing for Belt and Road Forum

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived in Beijing Friday for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The forum is slated for May 14 and 15 in the Chinese capital.

Under the Belt and Road Initiative, China and Pakistan have deepened their economic cooperation through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, or CPEC, a flagship project that will build a 3,000-kilometer trade route from the western Chinese city of Kashgar to the southern Pakistani port of Gwadar over the next few years.

Chinese President Xi Jinping promised to invest 46 billion U.S. dollars in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor when he went to Pakistan in 2015 as part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

CPEC was proposed by Chinese Premier Li Keqiang during his 2013 visit to Pakistan. One goal of the project is to help Pakistan build up its infrastructure and economy through the construction of modern transport networks, energy projects, and special economic zones.

Twenty-nine heads of state and government will attend the Belt and Road Forum that is the highest-profile international conference under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative as proposed by Chinese President Xi in 2013.
