Mount Celeste Benchmark on a Mac

I'm very excited to introduce you to our first ever 2D platformer on the channel and coincidentally what some call one of the greatest video games of all time! Celeste takes you on a journey of introspection as the heroine battles a mountain in its physical form and inter turmoil within herself. Whether or not she can overcome it will depend on the strength of those around her which fondly enough, help to capture the essence of the struggles of depression and anxiety experienced by the game's creator, Maddy Thorson. As we head into the hot summer months, I think this is a great time to transport ourselves back to an iconic, indominable mountaintop known as Celeste, running on a Mac.

1) I do want to preface this by saying that the thumbnail is the first of its kind on the channel because it was generated using ChatGPT 5.5 using source material found in the chapter 1 complete screen. Celeste is normally depicted in a state of rest by the campfire as she sets up camp on her way atop the Celeste mountain, but I found it fitting to adjust the scene to reward her accomplishments considering all the struggles it took to get there.

2) Speaking of struggles, I opted for keeping all of the failures into the footage to highlight all the ups and downs of my first playthrough. I also wanted to use it as a benchmark not just from a performance perspective but from a gameplay perspective in case one day we would like to return with newer hardware. Some of mistakes do come down to misreading context clues scattered around the environment such as the ones related to the winged red strawberries and the pointless machine hearts represented by a satellite dish, computer monitor and colorful birds.

3) As for performance, you won't be inundated with options similar to past games we've checked out. Instead, you'll be greeted with the following:

That said, given the game's art style and its native console heritage, I wasn't expecting to see more than 60FPS support on my journey which is more than enough for me to enjoy the time. I think it's safe to say that Celeste is a game that caters to those who want a break from hyper realistic worlds anyway.

-Disclaimer: This footage was captured using Wine enabled via CrossOver in order to improve gamepad compatibility with my device. The native Mac version will likely render the same so there shouldn't be any loss in comparability between these two versions.

4) As you can tell, Celeste can be quite challenging, and I don't recommend it for the faint of heart. That said, if you enjoy platformers and don't plan on rushing through, I think Celeste's true impact will be felt once you reach the top of the mountain. In the meantime, I hope you can forgive my rather clumsy mistakes scattered about the video.

-Fun fact: This game originally released on January 25, 2018 on Linux, macOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Windows with the Xbox One version releasing the day after. That said, there is a physical edition that you can buy now for those who would like to add this game to their home collection.
