Learn about the Cotton Patch Quilters Guild, Athens, GA, as Bonnie Browning talks with Sharon Rockholt and Frances Arnold. The Guild was started in 1985 with 15 members and currently has more than 100 members. Athens, Georgia, has a history of quilting - Harriet Powers was born there. She made many quilts to record local legends, Bible stories and events in her life.
In 1990 the Guild started making quilts for the Bettered Women's Shelter and continues making quilts for them today. The Charity Bee coordinates making thousands of quilts that are distributed to organizations in the community, including the Council on Aging, Prevent Child Abuse, local hospital NICU units, and hospice. The Guild's goal to provide education includes demonstrations at local festivals, at the UGA Art Museum, elementary schools, and the Steffan Thomas Museum.
During Coronavirus, the guild has held Zoom Show & Tell so the members can share the quilts they are working on.
