Quick and Easy - Make a Wreath from Recycled Wine Corks

Use those corks you've saved to make a decorative wreath for any season

It's time to drag out that collection and create something interesting. How about a wreath with a twist? It could be just the thing to complete your wine-country look -- a symbol of great hospitality, fine memories with friends and family as well as good luck and prosperity for the future. Don't have enough corks? Not to worry - ask people you know -- family, neighbors or local restaurants to save them for you.

What you'll need:

Used corks -- about 260 corks to make a 20" diameter wreath. Count them before beginning if you think you may not have enough. Although I had different types of corks, such as the synthetic and champagne type, I chose to use the standard, natural wine corks. Use one type for a more balanced look.
Wire -- a single length of about 21 ft. of fairly heavy weight wire, a bit heavier than the weight of a common heavy metal coat hanger, available and sold by the foot at most hardware or home center stores.
Ribbon or other decoration (optional)

You'll also need a few tools:

Measuring tape or yardstick
A hand drill and a 1/8" drill bit
Pliers: needle-nose or other small pliers
Wire-cutters or all-purpose shears.
Newspaper or drop-cloth
Kneeling pad, if you're working on the floor

Let's begin --

Spread out your newspapers or drop-cloth to catch any mess you might make. Drill a hole in the center of each cork and set aside. Unroll your wire to be sure it's smooth with no kinks or bends. Slide corks on to wire and push together to be sure they are tight, leaving about 12" on both finished ends.

With both hands, bring both ends of the wired corks together and twist wire ends together a few times. Lay flat so there are two parallel rows of corks. Hold the attached two ends with one hand and twist clockwise with the other until tight. There should be two rows of twisted corks. Fold in half again to double and attach the loose wire by looping through the other end. Pull to tighten. Repeat with another good clockwise twist until taut. There should be four rows of wired corks.

Attach ends together by looping the wire through the end and pull tight. There should not be any wire showing. Trim excess wire with wire cutters or shears. Shape into a circle and play with it a bit until you have a nice even circle. Bind the twisted corks with additional 6" lengths of wire in any loose areas to help keep the shape, if necessary. Any extra wire can be bent into a hook and attached to the wire part of the wreath to hang indoors or out. Add ribbon or other decoration if desired and you have the wine country look!
