FRESCOBALDI’S MANUSCRIPTS

Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) was undoubtedly one of the most renowned 17th century organists of his lifetime. Born in Ferrara in 1583, he became organist of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome in 1608. This prestigious position was related to a significant network of patrons, to which Frescobaldi remained faithful until the end of his life.

The pieces recorded here reveal a part of his production that is still largely in the shade, consisting of the keyboard pieces preserved in manuscript form. [..]

The present recording offers an anthology of keyboard pieces of varying characteristics, taken from several manuscript sources more or less close to Frescobaldi. 

The Fondo Chigi, now housed in the Vatican Library in Rome, owes its name to Flavio Chigi (1631-1693), a cardinal collector who is said to have collected musical manuscripts found in Frescobaldi’s circle after the musician’s death. It contains a vast collection of 17th century manuscripts notated in Italian tablature or intavolatura, the ancestor of today’s notation for keyboard instruments, which indicates..
