22-Year-Old Inventor Wins James Dyson Award 😲
Komal Panda, a 22-year-old student at the National Institute of Design, Haryana, invented a portable cooling device for insulin, and this device just won her the prestigious James Dyson Award 2024. More than 100 million Indians live with diabetes, and they need to store insulin between 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Without proper cooling, insulin loses its effectiveness, which can be life-threatening for people with diabetes. Komal Panda's dad, who works in a steel factory and is diabetic, struggled with this. He’d rush home during breaks just to get his insulin shot because there was no fridge at work. Inspired to help him and other diabetic people like him, Komal Panda started tinkering with the advanced thermoelectric technology that’s used in beer and vaccine coolers - to build Novocarry. Novocarry is compact, looks like a power bank, but keeps insulin cool at 5°C—making travel easier for diabetics. If scaled, Komal Panda's Novocarry could be a game-changer for millions of diabetics not just in India but the world.
