Peter, Paul and Mary - A Soalin' (Bass Enhanced)

ALBUM: A Holiday Celebration ..... LABEL: Warner Brothers ..... YEAR: 1988
The practice of "Souling" in England dates to the medieval period and continued there until the 1930s, it is still carried out today in some other countries. Soul cakes are small round cakes (or cookies) that are traditionally made for All Hallows' Eve, All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day to commemorate the dead in the Christian tradition. The cakes before baking were topped with the mark of a cross to signify that these were alms. They are given out to "soulers", mainly children and the poor, who go from door to door during the days of Allhallowtide singing and saying prayers for the souls of the givers and their friends. The 1891 version of the song was not originally a Christmas tune, but by 1893 the song already shared lines from similar Christmas carols: "Here We Come A-Wassailing" and "Christmas is A-Coming". This version by Peter, Paul and Mary enhances the Christmas aspect of the song by adding parts of "Hey, Ho, Nobody Home" and "God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen".
