I was given the opportunity to test out some of the new Flexvolt tools made by DeWalt. I have some backyard projects on my to-do list for the summer so the timing couldn't have been better.
The end posts are 4X4 pressure treated posts with a 1.5"X 1.5" rabbet cut into one of the corners, or rather they have one of the corners removed, but that in turn added 3 corners... FOCUS! I cut the rabbet full length and then cut a flat spot on the bottom so it would hug the edge of the deck. All the posts go two coats of blue outdoor paint. There was also two pressure treated 2X4's that were painted off camera. These are used as center supports.
The horizontal slats are cheap SPF from a home building center. I used a Sikkens stain to give them a cedar look without turning gray after the sun ravages them. They are full length (8') so I didn't need to trim the edges. They were all pre-drilled and countersunk to prevent splitting.
I used lag bolts and washers to attach the posts to the deck. I needed to add a small piece of painted trim to the bottom since my deck has a Duradek cover on it and I didn't want water getting in there. I sealed it up with a high-quality silicon off camera. Not ideal, but what do you do...
I made some 1" spacer blocks and started installing the slats from bottom to top, alternating thick and thin boards. I just started stacking until I thought it looked tall enough and then trimmed off the excess post material.
With 1.5 9ah Flexvolt batteries I cut over 200' of lumber, removed 27 lag bolts, installed 18 lag bolts, predrilled and countersunk 96 holes and drove 136 2" deck screws. I'm impressed.
DeWalt gave me these tools but did not pay me to make any videos. All opinions are my own and are uninfluenced. If these tools were garbage, I'd tell you. They are not! Having cordless tools is amazing... Having one battery that I can use between ALL my cordless tools is a game changer!
