While Hollywood often focuses on the Five Families of New York or the Chicago Outfit, the 2015 crime thriller Legend brought international attention to London’s most notorious underworld figures: identical twin gangsters Ronald and Reginald Kray. In this film breakdown and historical review, former Colombo family Caporegime Michael Franzese gives his candid assessment of Tom Hardy’s dual performance portraying both brothers. Drawing parallels between 1960s London and Prohibition-era Chicago under Al Capone, Michael examines the extreme contrast between Reggie’s sharp business instincts and Ronnie’s paranoid, unhinged violence.

Michael also pulls back the curtain on the real-world historical connection between the American Mafia and the Kray firm, detailing how syndicate architect Meyer Lansky dispatched representatives to negotiate lucrative European casino and gambling partnerships with the twins. Reflecting on the heartbreaking dynamic between the brothers and Reggie’s wife, Frances Shea, Michael shares deeply personal memories of trying to protect his own troubled brother and father in the underworld. Recounting his visit to London where he stood inside the very courthouse cell where the Krays were once held, Michael explains why unchecked street violence always guarantees the exact same tragic ending: life sentences, courtroom betrayals, and devastating loss.
