I’m Andy Parkin, Managing Director of the Multi-Award Winning Speed Screed. I’m here today to talk about liquid screed thickness.

How Thin Can you Go? Liquid Screed Thickness
Something that we are often asked, “How thin can I go with this screed?” You have got to look at a number of things to determine if liquid screed is suitable for your particular project, but what we’re going to talk about today is the general “calcium sulphate” version of liquid screed. There are some new cement versions on the market, but calcium sulphate account for 80 to 90% of the liquid screed market (2018).

It is a pump applied liquid floor screed, and is is generally mixed at the plant, delivered in a truck mixer, discharged into a pump, and then pumped into place.

There will be a structural element underneath the screed, and it can be use in bonded, unbonded, floating construction, and used with heated screeds too. It’s suitable for both commercial and domestic floors.

Bonded
If you are bonding the product to the substrate, you would need to apply a primer. The substrate needs to needs to be clean, dry, sound, and with no contamination. To ensure that the substrate is suitable there may need to be a mechanical process such as scabbling/shot blasting or grinding to prepare it for bonding.

Bonded liquid screed thickness minimum would be 15mm for the specialist version and 25mm for standard.
Bonded liquid screed thickness maximum would be 80mm for the specialist version and 80mm for standard.
Unbonded
This is where you a membrane is placed between the substrate and the screed. This could just be a 500 gauge slip membrane or a 1200 gauge damp proof membrane.

Unbonded liquid screed thickness minimum would be 15mm for the specialist version and 30mm for standard.
Unbonded liquid screed thickness maximum would be 80mm for the specialist version and 80mm for standard.
Floating
Floating construction is where there is thermal insulation or acoustic insulation.

Floating liquid screed thickness minimum would be 35mm domestic & 40mm commercial for both versions of the screed.
Minimum with underfloor heating pipes would be 20mm for the specialist version, and 30mm for the standard coverage above the pipes.
