Torigoe Matsuri - How to wear Fundoshi!

Every summer, the various neighbourhoods in Taito-ku, Tokyo, surrounding Torigoe Shrine, have a festival. Each neighbourhood has their own mikoshi (portable shrine) that is carried through the streets of the area. It is believed that the God from the shrine is transported to the portable shrine and they carry this around the area to allow the God to see everything. The highlight is the temple's special mikoshi which is said to be one of the heaviest in Japan, weighing in at around 4 tons -- the equivalent of a small helicopter! Participants can become quite aggressive in their attempts to carry the shrine, pushing and shoving others out of the way to get their chance. This is to show the God how popular he/she is. Traditional attire for the festival varies slightly but many of the men wear the traditional fundoshi for the day!
