Lunch Hour – Bank Break Room

The bank’s break room smelled like scorched coffee and microwaved leftovers. Eliana sat with her salad untouched, the folded note burning in her purse.

Her phone buzzed.

Asher: Outside.

She slipped into the drizzle. His SUV waited across the lot, matte black against wet pavement. He lowered the passenger window. “In.”

Every rule of safety her sisters had drilled into her screamed don’t get in cars with strangers. But Asher didn’t feel like a stranger. He felt like inevitability.

She slid in. The warmth and cedar hit her like a memory she didn’t own.

“You were marked again,” he said without preamble. “The car. The note. It’s escalation.”

Eliana’s throat tightened. “You keep saying marked. By who?”

His jaw flexed. “Rogues. A faction using crescent coins as their brand. They move money through fronts—clubs, charities, shell accounts. Your bank flagged something you weren’t supposed to see. Now they want to know how much you know.”

She blinked. Her fraud cases, her spreadsheets, her careful life—they’d tripped something larger. “This isn’t my world,” she whispered.

“It is now.” His voice softened. “And until it isn’t, you and your daughter don’t sleep alone.”

Her pulse jumped. “Excuse me?”

“I have safehouses. Pack-owned. Neutral ground. Cameras, wards, guards who don’t blink. You can work from there, she can rehearse, you both can breathe.”

Eliana crossed her arms. “We don’t know you.”

“You know enough.” Silver eyes locked on hers. “That I’ll bleed before I let harm touch you. That I don’t bluff.”

She wanted to scoff. Wanted to argue. But his stillness carried the weight of truth.

Her phone rang then—Naomi’s name flashing. She answered.

“Eliana? What’s going on? Deborah said she saw some guy shadowing you after the concert. You okay?”

Eliana’s throat closed. “I’m fine. We’re fine.”
