David Lammy asked if he will pay compensation to double murderer over human rights ruling

David Lammy has been urged to put “the interests of British people” ahead of human rights laws over the case of a double murderer who has been awarded compensation by the High Court over breaches of his rights.

The Justice Secretary was asked whether he could promise no compensation would be paid to Fuad Awale, who is serving a life sentence for shooting two men in the head in 2011.

Awale later helped take a prison officer hostage, which led to him being moved to a special unit for dangerous prisoners.

He was then stopped from having contact with other prisoners, including one of the men who killed Fusilier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in 2013.

However the High Court last year ruled that this had breached Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), his right to a private and family life.

Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick asked whether Mr Lammy would pay any compensation to Awale out of his own pocket, if he wanted to follow the court’s ruling.

The minister had earlier indicated he will be travelling to Strasbourg, home to the ECHR, where he would be looking to revise its implications for asylum decisions.
