Global National: April 26, 2021 | Brampton girl dies after testing positive for COVID-19

The pandemic's third wave continues to hammer Canada's health workers, as hospitalizations across the country reach record highs. This situation is especially bad in Ontario, which is even requesting help from the Canadian military. In the meantime, understaffed intensive care units, like the one at Humber River Hospital, are increasingly overwhelmed by patients. As Jeff Semple reports, doctors and surgeons from other specializations now have to shift gears to meet increased demand for critical care.

Last week the coronavirus claimed one of its youngest victims in Canada. Emily Viegas, a 13-year-old from Brampton, Ont., died after testing positive for COVID-19. Her death comes as the third wave of the pandemic continues to see increased spread among younger Canadians, with more of them landing in hospitals and critical care because of the deadly virus. As Eric Sorensen reports, the tragic loss is a painful reminder not to underestimate the crisis.

Alberta continues to be the hardest-hit province in Canada's COVID-19 crisis, with about 455 cases per 100,000 people — the highest of any province. The province's biggest hotspot is the Wood Buffalo municipality, home to Fort McMurray and Canada's valued oil sands. The region has now declared a state of local emergency, as infections keep growing out of control, with outbreaks at nine oil sands work sites. As Heather Yourex-West reports, it is posing a critical dilemma for oil workers considered an essential service.

Canada's vaccine rollout is making slow and steady progress, with about 29 percent of its population now vaccinated with one dose. The immunization campaign is also about to get a major boost, as millions more doses are set to arrive in the coming weeks. There are also hopes the United States could provide some of the 60 million AstraZeneca vaccine doses it's promising to share with the world. As Abigail Bimman reports, any new deliveries cannot come soon enough for a number of Ontario pharmacies, which are running low on shots due to increased demand.

India's COVID-19 crisis continues to worsen. Infections are reaching record highs with 1.7 million new cases over the past five days, along with thousands of deaths each day. Meanwhile, doctors are strained and are in dire need of more oxygen and medical supplies. As Redmond Shannon reports, countries are racing to provide the country critical aid, as Narendra Modi's government faces criticism for bungling the response to the crisis.

Hundreds of thousands of international travellers are still making their way into Canada each month and making sure they are properly tested is critical. A Toronto-area startup is facing criticism from Canadians who say it’s struggling to keep up with demand and that’s opening the door to new COVID-19 outbreaks. Roberta Bell explains.
