How Pollen Solved a Murder in 1959 | Forensic Briefing

A grain of pollen. Twenty million years old. And it convicted a killer.

In 1959, Austrian police had a suspect in a disappearance along the Danube - but no body and no confession. A botanist named Dr. Wilhelm Klaus examined mud from the suspect's boots under a microscope and discovered a combination of modern and fossilized pollen that could only exist in one narrow stretch of the river valley. Confronted with the evidence, the suspect led investigators to the body.

It was the first criminal conviction ever secured through pollen analysis - the birth of forensic palynology.

Cold Papers. The file remains open.
