Vietnam - City of Hoi An
In the 7th to 10th centuries Hoi An controlled the spice trade with Indonesia and by the 16th century it became a major international port trading with China, Japan and Europe. It lost its importance as a trading port when the river silted over at the end of the 18th century and for the next 200 years it changed very little. The city was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Today it is a popular tourist destination in Vietnam.
