Granola ~ How to make homemade granola cereal
My recipe for basic granola you can customize any flavour you want! Plus a secret to getting that crunchy, clustery texture you crave. From pumpkin spice to chocolate cherry, you can build on this standard formula to create the granola cereal of your dreams!
INGREDIENTS
6 cups rolled oats, quick cooking or large flake
1 cup natural bran or wheat germ
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup honey
Mix-ins and flavourings of your choice
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 325F/163C. In a large bowl combine oats, natural bran, brown sugar and salt. Add vegetable oil and honey. If using spices or extracts for flavour, add these in now. Stir until well combined and the mixture resembles wet sand.
Spread onto 2 parchment lined baking sheets and bake for 10 minutes. For a clumpy texture, pat the surface repeatedly to pack it down. For any mix-ins that are raw (desiccated coconut, raw pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds etc) sprinkle over the surface now. Bake another 10-15 minutes or until granola is lightly browned on the edges and your raw mix-ins are toasted. Pat down the granola again to achieve a clustery texture. Cool completely.
When cooled, break up granola until you reach your desired texture. Now add in any dried fruit, previously toasted nuts and seeds, chocolate chips etc) and mix well. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for several weeks. Enjoy!
