San Jose Police Cruiser Vandalized by Masked Crowd at Sideshow Event

A chaotic scene unfolded in West San Jose over the weekend when a group of masked individuals swarmed a police vehicle, jumping on the hood and shattering the windshield during an illegal sideshow gathering. A video of the incident quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread criticism.

According to the San Jose Police Department, the incident took place Saturday evening as officers responded to numerous reports of sideshow activity across the city. The disturbances were particularly concentrated in the western area of San Jose.

Crowds wearing ski masks were caught on video climbing on top of a police cruiser and damaging the vehicle while an officer was on the scene attempting to assist someone who had been hurt during the event.

“I just noticed there was way more traffic than usual yesterday,” said Harold Woo, a San Jose resident who lives nearby. “Things felt tense.”

Police said a bystander was struck by a vehicle involved in the sideshow stunts. A reserve officer, who happened to be in the area, was flagged down to help the injured person. However, before he could reach them, the officer’s vehicle was surrounded and attacked by a group of rowdy spectators.

“It’s horrifying to see one of our officers ambushed by a mob while trying to provide aid to someone seriously injured,” said Acting Police Chief Paul Joseph in a statement. “That kind of behavior is completely unacceptable.”

The condition of the injured individual has not been disclosed. The officer involved suffered only minor injuries but his vehicle was left badly damaged. The crowd dispersed before backup officers could arrive.

“It’s getting out of hand,” said Amelda Jimenez Lamar of San Francisco, who has witnessed similar gatherings. “These sideshows pop up quickly and draw in people from all over. You never know when law enforcement will show up — or what will happen when they do.”

Some locals worry that the widespread sharing of videos from the scene may fuel similar incidents.

“If people are seeing this on Instagram or TikTok, especially young people, they might think it’s exciting or cool,” said Molly Lynch, a resident of Santa Clara. “It creates a ripple effect.”

San Jose police said no arrests have been made so far, but an investigation is ongoing.

“We will pursue every lead to identify those responsible and hold them accountable,” said Chief Joseph. “We’re working closely with the District Attorney’s office to ensure any arrests lead to full prosecution under the law.”

Umesh Malhorta, another Santa Clara resident, expressed concern over the brazenness of the crowd. “Watching those people jump all over the police car like that... it shows a complete lack of fear. That’s dangerous for everyone.”
