Building a Diverse Bench

October 10, 2019
Brennan Center for Justice

Judicial diversity is central to achieving a system of justice that lives up to its name. A recent Brennan Center report found an extreme lack of racial, ethnic, and gender diversity on state supreme courts across the country. Twenty-four states have all-white high court benches.

Our panel of experts discussed diversity on the state and federal benches, how existing institutions pose hurdles to women and people of color, and how to help build more diverse benches for the future.

Moderator:
• Keesha Gaskins-Nathan, Director, Democratic Practice, United States Program, Rockefeller Brothers fund

Panelists:
• Vanita Gupta, President and CEO, Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights
• Hon. Robert A. Gordon, bankruptcy judge, District of Maryland
• Alicia Bannon, Managing Director, Democracy Program, Brennan Center for Justice
