When swales go bad...

Walk with me through the lower part of the AgriSocial Training Center project in Burundi.
I will explain why the current swales have been build the wrong way, and how we are making the best of it before a redo happening during the next dry season, in 6 or 7 months.

To be clear, I do not intend to explain how to fix all swales done the wrong way. I only show the way we chose to fix our problems, in our context, knowing that things will evolve according to the design for this project after the current rainy season.

We dicided to plant only grasses and short term crops, on and around the swales, exactly because the earthworks will either, be remove or be corrected, to be built following level lines. The permanent tree line, explain at the end of the video, will be the only longer term feature created at this time.
The main reasons why we are not re-doing everything allover right now are a lack of time to execute everything safely, due to my limited schedule and the rainy season up on us, and the fact the all the soil have been disturbed. If we remove the top swale right now, we will get much more erosion happening. Instead, we will sue the earthworks in place to protect the land, grow biomass and roots in the ground during the rather long rainy season. Changes will happen happen during the dryer time.
