Bloomsday in Shanghai 2021

Inspired by the enthusiasm for James Joyce in China, the Irish Consulate in Shanghai gathered Irish and Chinese friends together for Bloomsday, the celebration of James Joyce and his famous novel Ulysses. Each year, Bloomsday is celebrated around the world wherever the Irish and lovers of great literature are to be found. 2021 once more saw Shanghai at the forefront of the global Bloomsday festivities, as the largest and most ambitious public-facing event organized by Ireland’s overseas mission network anywhere in the world for the second year in a row. The beautiful surroundings of a traditional Shanghainese garden venue transformed into Joyce’s Dublin of 1904, with a number of interactive representations of key locations from the text. Guests, in vintage Edwardian costumes and props, were treated to Irish food and drink courtesy of Bord Bia, the Irish food board, as well as a selection of readings from Ulysses, and a live performance of Irish music.
