"Huge Loss": Maryland's Six Flags America to shut down later this year, local leaders react
The owners of Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, announced plans to permanently close the park and put the 500-acre property up for sale after the 2025 season, according to a statement released Thursday.
Six Flags Entertainment, in a statement about the shutdown to investors, said the D.C. area's biggest amusement park and the attached Hurricane Harbor park were "not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan." The park will permanently shut down on Nov. 2.
Six Flags President and CEO Richard Zimmerman said they believe the property should be redeveloped to reach the highest value and have signed on commercial real-estate firm CBRE to manage its sale.
Prince George's County councilmember Krystal Oriadha called it the "end of an era," after the shutdown was announced.
