"In this Reel, IFAS Expert Faculty focuses on the Peterson Olefination Reaction, a highly important stereoselective transformation in Organic Chemistry. The session explains how the reaction proceeds under both acidic and basic conditions and highlights the crucial role of the relative orientation of the OH and SiMe₃ groups in determining the stereochemistry of the final alkene product.

Students learn a powerful exam-oriented trick: under acidic conditions, an anti arrangement of OH and SiMe₃ leads predominantly to the E-alkene, while a syn arrangement favors the Z-alkene. In contrast, under basic conditions, a syn arrangement gives the E-alkene and a trans arrangement leads to the Z-alkene. These stereochemical relationships are frequently tested in CSIR NET, GATE, and other competitive examinations through mechanism-based and product prediction questions.

This Session is Designed for CSIR NET Chemical Sciences aspirants to revise and understand Peterson Olefination stereochemistry, strengthen reaction mechanism concepts, and master E/Z alkene prediction strategies.
