Shri Mahalakshmi Kanakadhara Stotram is a hymn composed in Sanskrit by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. Kanakadhārā means “Stream" of “Gold", and the hymn is called by this name since legend has it that when Shri Adi Shankaracharya recited it, Goddess Lakshmi appeared in front of him and unleashed a Stream of Gold.

Shri Adi Shankaracharya was born at Kaladi during the eighth century at a time when Sanatana Dharma was at stake. It was Shri Adi Shankaracharya who cemented the bonds by instituting Panchayatana Pooja incorporating all the five Gods (Shakti, Surya, Ganapati, Vishnu and Shiva) and making everybody understand that worship of one God amounts to worship of all by his Advaita Siddhanta.

He established four Peeta’s:
One at Sringeri in the South at Karnataka for the propagation of Yajur Veda
Second at Puri in the East at Odisha for the propagation of Rig Veda
Third at Dwaraka in the West at Gujarat for the propagation of Sama Veda and
Fourth at Badari in the North at Uttar Pradesh for the propagation of Atharva Veda
These four Peeta’s are effectively functioning even today as per the principles and procedures laid down by Bhagavatpada Shri Adi Shankaracharya

The story of Kanakadhara Stotram goes something like this:

Shri Adi Shankaracharya during his Brahmachari Bhikshatana, one day stopped at the house of a poor Brahmin lady. The woman was very poor and nothing was available in her house to offer. She was very much upset and worried that she could not offer anything to such a great person who came to her house. She earnestly searched for something to be given in her house. At last she found an Amla fruit. She was feeling very shy to offer but she gave it with all humility and respect in the bowl of Shri Adi Shankaracharya. Shri Adi Shankaracharya was very much moved at the sight of the poverty stricken woman and immediately in an extempore way started imploring Goddess Lakshmi to be merciful towards this poor Brahmin lady to drive away her poverty

He recited twenty one Shlokas in praise of Goddess Lakshmi Who was very much pleased and appeared before Shri Adi Shankaracharya and asked for his cause of prayer

Shri Adi Shankaracharya pleaded her to grant riches to the Brahmin lady. Goddess Lakshmi said that this Brahmin lady did not qualify to get any riches in this life as she did not to do any charities in her previous life and carry consideration and she deserves sufferance and justified her stand of not conferring any wealth on her

Shri Adi Shankaracharya while accepting her stand replied that in this life she gave him Amla fruit with very great reverence inspite of not having any thing due to her extreme poverty and this act of her alone will justify to shower riches on her. Hearing upon this Goddess Lakshmi was greatly moved and immensely pleased with the advocacy of the argument of Shri Adi Shankaracharya and showered instantly golden rain of Amla fruits

Thus the Stotram of Shri Adi Shankaracharya towards Goddess Lakshmi is Sacred, Famous and popular known as Kanakadhara Stotram. Bhagavatpada Shri Adi Shankaracharya’s Kanakadhara Stotram is also called by him as Suvarnadhara Stotram

There are three Shlokas in ancient palmyra leaves in addition to the twenty one Shlokas said to have been recited by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. These three are also incorporated in this video for the benefit of the devotees since they fall in line with the main Shlokas in their spirit. These Shlokas were brought to the notice by Brahmashri Bhutapuri Subrahmanya Sharma with great benediction

Shri Adi Shankaracharya expressed in this small, concise and powerful Kanakadhara Stotram the impregnated truth of Divine splendour and his mission to grant Happiness and Peace to the ennobling people. Bhagavatpada prayed and wrote powerful and protracted hymns on every deity he visited during his wide travels along the length and breadth of this Country

Hinduism owes its existence today to Shri Adi Shankaracharya for its renaissance and his exposition of Hindu pantheon. Kanakadhara Stotram thus enhances our vision and bestows the grace of Shri Mahalakshmi to fulfil our desires

Shri Adi Shankaracharya has sung this "Kanakadhara Stotram" for the welfare of everyone who is suffering their past Karma and suffering in poverty

Shri Mahalakshmi really is for Devotion and Purity of heart. If we always involve in good deeds, always chanting Gods name, we will surely be blessed by her
