Steve Smith and Vital Information: “Self Portrait” LIVE

Vital Information at Kuumbwa Jazz , Santa Cruz, CA, on March 27, 2023.
Manuel Valera (keyboards), Janek Gwizdala (bass) and I recorded a trio version of the Mike Mainieri composition "Self Portrait" on our new album TIME FLIES. Modern saxophone master Donny McCaslin happened to be in Santa Cruz and sat in on a couple of tunes. Donny and I played this song when we both played with Steps Ahead some years ago, so it was natural for Donny to sit in on this tune We all love this Mike Mainieri song and I feel this is a particularly heartfelt rendition.
