Film Lecture Series Part 3/3: The Hitchcock Blonde—and One Brunette

Nearly a century after his first directing credit, the movies of the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, continue to thrill, terrify, and delight audiences around the world. He may be the most influential director of all time: filmmakers, artists, musicians, and photographers find inspiration today from his stories and style.

Join us as award-winning author and Emmy-nominated producer Steven C. Smith reveals how Hitchcock channeled his own private fears into cinema classics that remain the gold standard for suspense: Psycho, Vertigo, Rear Window, North by Northwest, The Birds, and many more.

Each of our programs will be a standalone lecture, using an aspect of Hitchcock’s work to investigate the methods of his genius. We’ll explore his relationships with such stars as Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, and Ingrid Bergman…see how he transformed television…and find out why 21st century audiences still love his glamorous “slices of cake,” built on layers of romance, adventure, deceit and murder.

Rancho Mirage resident Steven C. Smith has interviewed many of Alfred Hitchock's collaborators and appears as a film historian in several Hitchcock documentaries. He received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award for his biography of Bernard Herrmann, the composer most associated with Hitchcock. Steven’s over-200 documentaries include collaborations with Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Stephen Sondheim, Julie Andrews, Cicely Tyson, Harrison Ford, and Sidney Poitier. He is the author of the award-winning biography Music by Max Steiner: The Epic Life of Hollywood’s Most Influential Composer.
