What are the typical issues for a baby born at 34 weeks?
A mother is the best incubator for her growing baby. Every day inside of a mom will save three days inside of the newborn ICU. With that said, sometimes there comes a point in pregnancy where a baby, either for the baby's wellbeing or the mother's wellbeing, the baby would be better out. It sounds like you're having some complications where this might be the case. If your doctor ever recommends induction be sure to listen to them because they have your best interests at heart and they want you and your baby to be healthy and well. If it does come down to delivering you early talk with your doctor about your specific questions and they may also even recommend that a neonatologist from the newborn ICU comes and talks to you in greater detail about your baby's prognosis. They can share statistics with you and their experience with preterm babies when it comes to your gestational age, like at 32 weeks, 33 weeks, 34 weeks and tell you what you can likely expect. At the end of the day the best prognosis can be made after your baby is born when they see how he or she is responding to treatment. At 34 weeks the good thing is that the long-term prognosis is the same as full term babies. Actually if a woman goes into labor at 34 weeks her doctor will typically not stop her. This doesn't mean though that there wouldn't be hurdles to overcome in the beginning. Babies born between 34 and 37 weeks often have breathing issues and jaundice and they have issues with eating and so they have issues growing. They have to stay inside the newborn ICU until they're able to breathe on their own, and eat well, and they've overcome jaundice, and other issues that might have existed at the time of birth. If your baby is born preterm they usually say count on your baby being in the newborn ICU until their due date and if they get to go home sooner than that then it's a pleasant surprise. I hope the very best for you and your baby and if you have any other questions for me in the future feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms and recommend us to your friends and family too.
