Horsforth in the 1930s

The 16mm footage was filmed by Long Row chemist, Herbert Hodgson, and includes a Parade (prior to the Woodside Comic Cricket match); a Whitsun Sing on The Green; the official opening of Hall Park in 1932 and also some colour footage of WWI veterans at a Remembrance Day parade, probably in the late 1940s.

Herbert had his chemist shop where the bar, Granville's, is today (opposite the Brownlee Arms).

The film, now in the archive of Horforth Museum, was transferred to digital tape and is made up of several reels of film on one larger reel. Some of these had been spliced together back-to-front and wrong way round (due to twisting of the tape) and has now been corrected.

Herbert did film more, but relations have been unable to find any more film canisters.

The film was, of course, silent, and an appropriate sound bed brings the film alive. The voice-over is by former Calendar presenter, Geoff Druett, and the dates etc of the events checked against the Airedale & Wharfedale Observer of the time and help from Horsforth historian, Alan Cockroft.

If anyone has further knowledge of the people who appear or the events - please leave a comment.
